Having an outdoor gathering can be a challenge, especially in the summer time in the south. The temperature and the insects, among other factors, must be accounted for in order for all guests to enjoy themselves. Here are a few tips to make sure your next gathering goes as smoothly as possible:

  1. Beat the Bugs: Nobody wants to be slapping away mosquitos all afternoon and evening. There are several ways to keep these critters from ruining your gathering besides covering yourself in bug spray. Candles or torches can be purchased for a reasonable price, and they carry scents that drive away mosquitos; plus, they add a little bit of ambiance to the setting. Alternatively, you can have your bushes sprayed with chemicals that drive away mosquitos for about a month. Ideally, if you have torches and the bushes sprayed, you will not have to worry about itching at mosquito bites all night.
  2. Keep Everything Cool: A good tip when hosting a gathering is to have ice ready a day in advance. The last thing a host needs to be doing when preparing the final stages for a get together is scrambling to keep food and drink cold. Also, it is always a good idea in the summer time to have plenty of water present for guests to drink. A hydrated guest is a happy guest.
  3. Make Eating Outside Easy: Wrap cutlery together in a napkin. This will make things run smoother, and it allows guests a free hand for their drink because they will be able to hold their plate and utensils in one hand. It seems like a simple tip, but it will make a noticeable difference at your gathering, especially if kids are present.

Follow these steps and make your next outdoor gathering a huge success. Your guests will have a great time, and just as important, so will you. For more information, please visit our friends at www.goodhousekeeping.com.
