Kahlúa, a rum and coffee liqueur that takes 7 years to produce, was born in Mexico in 1936. Since then it has been used to make some amazing cocktails and concoctions. Today is national Kahlúa Day, so here are some classic drink recipes using Kahlúa! (All the following drink recipes, and more, are from the official Kahlúa website).

Espresso Martini

THE SOPHISTICATED-YET APPROACHABLE-STYLISH-CLASSY-DELICIOUS-YUMMY-UNFORGETTABLE-COFFEE-RICH-GO-TO-MARTINI

HOW TO MAKE

1 PART KAHLÚA

1 PART ABSOLUT VODKA

1 PART ESPRESSO

OPTIONAL: ADD SIMPLE SYRUP TO TASTE

Ok, you’ll need an espresso machine and a shaker for this one. It sounds complicated but it’s just a matter of mixing booze with coffee. Shake the Kahlúa, Absolut Vodka and espresso together with plenty of ice. Strain into a cocktail glass to get rid of all the small ice chips. Tip: Shake for like 10 seconds for optimal frothiness.

B-52 Shot

A DRINK BORN IN THE 70'S, THE B-52 SHOT IS A COMBINATION OF KAHLÚA, IRISH CREAM AND TRIPLE SEC (BAR TALK FOR ORANGE LIQUEUR).

HOW TO MAKE

1 PART KAHLÚA

1 PART IRISH CREAM LIQUEUR

1 PART TRIPLE SEC

Ok so layers – the opposite of mixing. It’s delicate, so treat the B52 shot like your grandma’s vase! Recipe secret lies in the density of the liquids. Grab a chilled shot glass, start with Kahlúa, then add cream liqueur and finish with the orange liqueur. Tip: Pour the booze on the back of a spoon for perfect layering. Better Tip: Set it on fire!

Black Russian

MEET THE BLACK RUSSIAN – THE OLDER BROTHER OF THE WHITE RUSSIAN. WITH A MIXTURE OF THE DEEP, RICH, COLOR OF KAHLÚA AND THE UNMISTAKABLE SPIRIT OF ABSOLUT VODKA.

HOW TO MAKE

1 PART KAHLÚA

2 PARTS ABSOLUT VODKA

Fill a rocks glass with ice. Add the booze, mix and enjoy your very own Black Russian.

HOW TO MAKE

2.5 PARTS KAHLÚA

FRESH LEMON JUICE

0.5 PART SIMPLE SYRUP

1 PART EGG WHITE

Pour Kahlúa, lemon juice, simple syrup and the egg whites in a shaker. Shake for ten seconds. Then add a big scoop of ice to the shaker and shake again. Strain into a martini glass. As you know, all good relationships require some work.

Mudslide

A TWIST ON THE ICE-COLD FROZEN MUDSLIDE, THIS COCKTAIL, SIMPLY KNOWN AS THE MUDSLIDE DRINK, COMES FROM A MUCH WARMER PLACE.

HOW TO MAKE

1 PART KAHLÚA

1 PARTS ABSOLUT VODKA

1.5 PARTS IRISH CREAM LIQUEUR

Shake Kahlúa, Absolut Vodka and Irish cream Liqueur in a shaker with lots of ice. Serve in a rocks glass over ice. Easy does it. Tip: to make it look even more delicious, add some chocolate flakes on top, because... who says you can't indulge?

White Russian

MADE FROM KAHLÚA, VODKA AND CREAM; THE WHITE RUSSIAN BRINGS IT ALL TOGETHER.

HOW TO MAKE

1 PART KAHLÚA

1 PART ABSOLUT VODKA

1 PART HEAVY CREAM

Fill a rocks glass with ice cubes. Add Kahlúa and Absolut Vodka, finish up with a cream layer. Tip: Ok, it’ll never be as pretty as the pictures. BUT, the layering is manageable at home – just pour the cream off the back of a spoon. Another tip: Serve with a straw and stir it up. *Want a less calorific version? Try it with milk, skim milk or soymilk!
